Parish Newsletter - A Note from the Editor

Steve McCann asked me if I would produce a monthly Newsletter for distribution to Parishoners, non-Parishioners and anyone who may be interested to know what is going on.

The aim is to have the Newsletter available on the first Sunday after the 15th of each month and will include details of forthcoming events, snippets of this and that and a list of the Services for the following 6 weeks.

To that end I need your help!

If you are organising anything or have some information or news that you think would be of interest to others please let me know.

As well as having this in paper format, it would be extremely good to be able to circulate the Newsletter electronically.  So if you have an email address and are happy to receive it in this format, please let me know.

The Newsletter is now in circualtion. If you have any comments (negative, but hopefully positive) please do get in touch.  I won’t be offended, just grateful!

Coffee Morning

We welcome everyone to join us for a Shrove Tuesday Celebration at St. Matthew Church Hall in Church Cross on Tuesday, 21 February, from 10 am - 1 pm.  Those who are able, please donate baked goods, and ring Maude Swanton to offer your service on the day.  There will be coffee, cakes, and pancakes as well as a cake stall.  The proceeds for the day will be in aid of Cancer Connect.  We look forward to seeing you there, and we thank you in advance for your contribution to the day.

Ash Wednesday will be on 22 February.  We will mark the day by a Holy Communion Service at Saint Matthias in Ballydehob at 8PM.

Lent Course

During the six weeks of Lent a course will be hosted at the Rectory on Thursday evenings beginning on the 23 February at 8 PM.  Everyone, church-goer or not, is welcome to attend.  The course will borrow from biblical references and be addressing the theme of our faith as a way to freedom.

William James 'Jimmy' Shannon of Lisheenacreagh, Ballydehob died in Bantry General Hospital on Wednesday Morning, 28 December. Jimmy was a lover of music and a great singer, sharing his vocal talent with many local people through the years. His burial, on 31 December, was marked by Charlie Coughlan singing The Old Threshing Mill, Jimmy's Favourite song to sing.  We remember Jimmy’s sister, Annie Burchill, in this time of loss, and extend to her our condolences and prayers; may our Lord grant her comfort in her loss.

Sunday School

Although the first recorded Sunday School was in 1751 in Nottingham the founding of Sunday schools is commonly associated with the work of a Robert Raikes who in the mid 1700s saw the need to prevent children in slums descending into crime.  In 1781, he opened the first school on a Sunday, the only day these boys and girls living in the slums and working in the factories could attend. Using the Bible as their textbook, he taught them to read and write.

Fortunately the children who attend the Sunday school in Ballydehob no longer have to endure reading and writing lessons but enjoy a multitude of activities such as Bible crafts, object lessons, stories, skits, games, songs & much more.   Run twice a month, on the 2nd and 3rd Sundays, the school lasts for the duration of the Sunday service.  The numbers attending the school varies from a low of 2 to a high of 12 and the children are aged from 3 upwards.

If you would like to help out at the school or have children who would like to attend please call Sharon Wolfe (37277) or David Hayward (37555).

The Aughadown Church Hall

If you know of anyone who is having a party, family gathering, wedding reception, children’s party, and are looking for a venue, please suggest the Church Hall at Church Cross.

It comes with a well equipped kitchen; good parking; lots of space outside if you have youngsters wanting to run about and let off steam, and is very reasonable to hire.

The Aughadown Walking Group meets every Monday and Thursday at 10am at the GAA Community Hall at Church Cross.  All are welcome to join the Group for a walk.  The walk lasts about 40 minutes along local lanes, all of which are fairly flat and sheltered.   It is not a route march, a race or over-strenuous, but an opportunity to get fit and socialise.  There is no charge and for further information please call Brigid O’Brien on 38132.

Sheila Mitchell is one of our organists.  She and her husband retired to Toormore in March this year, and attended Altar Church.  When it became known that Sheila had been a Music Teacher and was a Grade V111 on the piano she was persuaded to play the organ for the summer services in Crookhaven.  Having never played the organ before she was at first reluctant, but nevertheless undertook the task and enjoyed it.  She is now one of the team of organists in Aughadown.  The Rector chooses the hymns and Sheila has the list well in advance of the service.  She practices at home and then has more time on the organ, where she experiments with the stops, how loud to play and so on.  She writes the words under the music so can sing at the same time as playing.  We welcome Sheila to our Parish.
